As the first Special Edition, Faber-Castell chose a fountain pen with a piston mechanism and a body made of snakewood.
The characteristic grain of snake wood exerts a magical attraction, not only for the most expert. Reddish brown in color with a mottled pattern, it is among the most expensive and heaviest woods in the world. It is very decorative and is used to make violin bows and exclusive luxury objects.
Exceptional quality
The attractive combination of wood and metal provides a touch of subtle elegance. The wooden body harmonizes perfectly with the platinum-plated metal finishes, for example on the cap.
The year 2003 marks the start of a new series of special editions, which every year will present a new magnum version of the Graf von Faber-Castell fountain pen. Each edition is produced for one year only.

Looking at the 2010 Special Edition, you are fascinated by the interplay of delicate engravings and elegant marbled steel parts.Until the end of the 19th century, the marbling of steel was a sign of the high quality of a weapon, given the inimitable shine it provided. For centuries, this process was passed on by word of mouth and kept a jealous secret.
Metal surfaces were steeled by using charred leather, generating shifting color hues when cooled. To date, it has been found that up to 20 parameters converge to generate this surprising visual effect, among which are the thickness of the metal, the temperature and the cooling speed.
Shifting color hues
Extensive experience in craft work can influence results, but never accurately anticipate them. Thus, no two marbled metals are completely alike.The metal surface is perfected according to an elaborate engraving process framed with 24-karat gold inlays. Today very few workshops can combine these traditional arts with the mastery required by the 2010 Special Edition.
Before tempering the steel, the pen of the year is engraved through a traditional process. The engraver hand chisels the dovetail guide into which the gold inlay is inserted for subsequent polishing. A final result that requires great skills and precision for perfection

PLATINUM-PLATED, CURLY BIRCH
With great precision, five slivers of ‘curly’ birch are inserted in the platinum-plated frames of the fountain pen and rollerball pen. A special process has made it possible to cut such thin pieces from this wood, which is very delicate on account of its attractive patterning. That takes a degree of skill otherwise found only in the cutting and polishing of gemstones. The warm colour of the wood, full of nuances, harmonizes wonderfully with the carnelian that is let into the cap and glows an intense red. The name Graf von Faber-Castell is engraved in the end piece in runes.
