The butterfly, depicted on our prized limited edition Maki-e pen, elegantly flapping its wings toward flowers is known as the Great Purple Emperor. The butterfly design is regarded as a symbol of regeneration and revival, an auspicious motif as the butterfly transforms itself from caterpillar to pupa to adult over its lifetime. The Great Purple Emperor’s valiantand magnificent appearance, and its stately beauty, has made it the national butterfly of Japan. In comparison to other butterfly species, it is relatively large in size, the adult male being 9 – 10 cm while the female is 11 – 12 cm, with wings fully extended. prestigious traditional handicrafts of Japan.

This Pilot Custom Urushi lacquered ebonite fountain pen was created by maki-e artisans (kokkokai) in Japan. It features the Roiro Urushi technique in solid black. The pen has a broad two-tone 18kt gold large #30 nib. A Con-70 converter is included, but you can also use Pilot cartridges if you prefer. It comes packaged in a gift box.
Lacquering has been used in Japan for thousands of years. The Pilot Custom Urushi is crafted from Japanese ebonite and lacquered using only pure Urushi lacquer. Like their Namiki pens, Pilot uses a lacquering technique called Roiro, which requires substantial time and skill to create a uniform and mirror-like finish. Each Custom Urushi pen is lacquered, cured, and polished three times to create a beautiful quality result.

Noshi are long, thin strips of dried abalone used to wrap gifts after use in Shinto rituals. Today, it is used as a decorative accompaniment to gifts and presents on auspicious occasions. These abalone strips are a symbol of good luck known as Tabane-noshi (Noshi Bundle). This design elegantly depicts waves of multi-colored Noshi, bound together and flaring out.
