Very few authors in the history of literature have had the ability to develop dialogue and bring characters to life in such an elegant, ironic and clever way as British author Jane Austen.
Montblanc has created the Writers’ Edition Homage to Jane Austen to pay tribute to one of the most famous authors in British literature.
This edition revives the Regency period, when noblemen’s estates were the setting for grand parties held for the purpose of cultivating social relationships and forging marriage alliances.
The fluting of a classical column decorates the elegant sandstone-grey resin barrel, along with Jane Austen’s signature. The contrasting blue-grey cap references the type of double-collared coat commonly worn during the Regency by gentlemen, such as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. Gold-plated rings on the barrel and platinum-plated details add the finishing touches to the design.
The engraving of the Roman numeral XLIII on the cap ring is a reference to the chapter in the novel in which Elizabeth Bennet visits Mr. Darcy’s estate for the first time. The title page of her novel Sense and Sensibility, published in 1811, declared that the work had been written By a Lady – that is, by a woman.
The declaration of authorship adorns the top of the cap of the Writers’ Edition Homage to Jane Austen Edition, along with the Montblanc emblem. The silhouette of the writing instrument is reminiscent of a wax seal. The clip is as unusual as the cap.
In the form of a braided cord with a drawstring closure, it evokes a small bag (the reticule bag), a type of handbag used by women in the early 19th century to carry powder, a mirror and the indispensable pocket handkerchief.
