Namiki Yukari “Shooting Stars” or “Shooting Stars”.
Shooting stars are a cosmic phenomenon that occurs when small fragments of rock, called meteors, enter the Earth’s atmosphere. The high speed of these bodies and the friction they suffer when they come into contact with the atmosphere cause them to heat up and result in a trail of light that can occasionally be observed in the night sky. This phenomenon has given rise to numerous superstitions and, to this day, they are still considered symbols of good luck and the custom of making a wish when observing a shooting star in the sky persists in many cultures.
Souls of the deceased who roam the heights and grant wishes to the living or gods who, driven by curiosity, opened the dome of heaven to observe the Earth, letting some stars fall on it, are some of the beliefs associated with shooting stars and constitute the background that it intends to represent, with its fantastic maki-e decoration, the Namiki Yakuri Shooting Stars fountain pen.
Its design is due to the hand of the maki-e artist Misa and for its elaboration different decorative techniques are used such as the “Togidashi Maki-e” or the “Raden”. The first in its Fuse-zai-shiki variant to reproduce the darkness of the night and highlight various details on it, such as the trail of stars; the second, with its iridescent fragments of mother-of-pearl, to represent the celestial bodies. A perfect conjunction that astonishes for its meticulousness and its fascinating beauty.
The final result is a true work of art, made entirely by hand in a laborious process that can take up to three months and signed by the artist on the back of the barrel. A piece that also uses different precious materials and that is irreproducible with total accuracy, which makes each writing instrument a unique and unrepeatable piece and explains its high cost and exclusivity.
All the fountain pens in the Yukari collection are equipped with a practical cartridge or converter loading system and mount a splendid 18-carat solid gold nib that is available in thicknesses F (fine), M (medium) and B (broad). . The engraved decoration of the latter includes, among other elements, the silhouette of the famous Mount Fuji with its summit apparently covered in snow thanks to the strategic placement of a fine rhodium mask.
